Maharashtra Chief Minister Raises Alarm Over TCS Nashik Harassment Allegations

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday voiced profound concern regarding the alleged sexual harassment incidents reported at a Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) unit located in Nashik. Fadnavis described the matter as extremely grave, suggesting that the acts appeared to have been executed in a systematic and planned manner by what he termed a "module."

Government and Central Agency Involvement

While acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations, Chief Minister Fadnavis commended TCS management for their handling of the situation. He noted that the company's role has been commendable, as it clearly stated it would not protect the accused and reaffirmed its strict "zero tolerance" policy towards such misconduct. Fadnavis emphasized that the state government will thoroughly investigate the extent of the alleged module's connections and has already engaged central agencies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA), to assist in the probe.

Legal Proceedings and Arrests

A local court in Nashik on Thursday remanded two accused individuals in police custody until April 18 in connection with the case, which involves allegations of sexual harassment and forcible religious conversion at the TCS facility. The judge granted a two-day police custody extension. The accused face charges under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, specifically:

  • Section 75: Sexual harassment
  • Section 79: Using words, gestures, acts, or objects to insult a woman's modesty

To date, seven employees have been arrested across nine registered cases. The arrested individuals include six male employees from the Nashik unit and one female HR manager.

Special Investigation Team Formed

Earlier this week, the police established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine complaints filed by eight women employees. These complainants alleged that senior colleagues subjected them to mental and sexual harassment, and that the human resources department neglected their grievances. Some of the women further claimed that the accused attempted to forcibly convert them and hurt their religious sentiments.

TCS and Tata Sons Response

TCS issued a statement on Sunday, reiterating its long-standing zero-tolerance policy towards any form of harassment or coercion. The company confirmed that employees allegedly involved in the sexual harassment at the Nashik office have been suspended pending investigation. The following day, Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran expressed that the complaints and allegations from the Nashik office are "gravely concerning and anguishing." He announced that a comprehensive investigation is underway, led by Chief Operating Officer Arathi Subramanian, to ascertain the facts and identify those responsible for the situation.

The case continues to unfold as authorities delve deeper into the allegations, with both state and central agencies working to ensure justice and accountability in this distressing matter.
