The Murugappa Group confirmed his passing in an official statement, noting that he is survived by his wife Lalitha Vellayan, his sons Arun Vellayan and Narayanan Vellayan, and his grandchildren.
During his extensive tenure with the conglomerate, Vellayan provided strategic direction across the group's diversified businesses. His visionary approach played a crucial role in expanding and enhancing the Murugappa Group's reputation as one of India's most respected business houses.

Vellayan's influence extended across multiple companies within the Murugappa Group, where he served on various boards. He held the position of Chairman at Coromandel International Ltd and EID Parry Ltd, demonstrating his expertise in managing diverse business verticals.
Beyond the Murugappa Group, Vellayan contributed his expertise to several other prominent organizations. He served on the boards of Kanoria Chemicals & Industries Ltd, EXIM Bank, and Indian Overseas Bank, showcasing the breadth of his experience and the trust he commanded across different sectors.

The veteran business leader also played significant roles in various industry and trade organizations. He led prestigious bodies including the Southern India Chamber of Commerce, Fertiliser Association of India, Indian Sugar Mills Association, and All India Cycle Manufacturers Association.
Vellayan's commitment to education was evident through his role as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIM-Kozhikode). In recognition of his contributions, Vellayan received honorary Doctor of Science degrees from both Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and Aston University in the UK.
