New Delhi: Delhi Traffic Police on Saturday claimed a 27% reduction in traffic congestion-related calls during the first three months of 2026, as compared to the corresponding period in 2025 in central Delhi.
According to the data, total congestion calls declined from 1,378 in January–March 2025 to 1,007 in January–March 2026, registering an overall reduction of approximately 27%, thereby providing notable relief to commuters.
Key Reductions Across Traffic Circles
Major reductions were observed across key traffic circles. Kotwali and Daryaganj circles registered a decrease of 49%, while the maximum decline of 50% was recorded in Civil Lines circle, particularly at Tis Hazari, Rajpur Road and nearby locations. Other circles such as Paharganj, Timarpur and Karol Bagh also showed an average decrease of 25%.
Areas with Marginal Increases
However, some locations such as Kamla Market and Sadar Bazar recorded a marginal increase in calls due to heavy market activity, commercial traffic movement, metro construction and seasonal variations. Targeted interventions are being undertaken in these areas to further streamline traffic flow.
Measures Taken
DCP (Traffic) Nishant Gupta said the reduction in congestion has been achieved through optimized deployment of traffic personnel, strict enforcement against improper parking, action against encroachments, improved signal management and special drives against violations such as wrong-side driving and lane indiscipline.
These efforts have contributed to smoother traffic movement and reduced travel times for commuters in central Delhi. The police continue to monitor and address congestion hotspots with a focus on sustainable traffic management.
