Progcap's ProgShakti Initiative Drives 105% Surge in Credit for Women Entrepreneurs
In a significant development for women-led businesses, fintech company Progcap has announced that its ProgShakti initiative has achieved a remarkable 105% increase in credit limits for women entrepreneurs. Jaipur has emerged as one of the leading centers of growth, highlighting the program's impact in fostering financial inclusion.
Expanding Access to Credit in Tier 2 and Tier 3 Markets
The ProgShakti program is specifically designed to expand access to credit in Tier 2 and Tier 3 MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) markets, where formal credit has historically been limited. By targeting these underserved areas, Progcap aims to bridge the gap and empower women entrepreneurs who face systemic barriers in securing loans.
Pallavi Shrivastava, co-founder of Progcap, emphasized the challenges faced by women in the financial sector. "One of the biggest hurdles for women entrepreneurs has been the traditional requirement of collateral and a male co-applicant," she stated. "Through ProgShakti, we sought to remove these barriers by offering unsecured working capital loans that women can access independently."
Addressing Systemic Challenges in Loan Approvals
Studies reveal that loan rejection rates for women hover around 19%, compared to just 8% for men. This disparity is often attributed to factors such as lack of collateral and limited credit history, which disproportionately affect female business owners. The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) reports that the credit gap for women entrepreneurs stands at 35%, underscoring the urgent need for initiatives like ProgShakti to address these systemic issues.
By providing unsecured loans, ProgShakti enables women to overcome traditional lending obstacles, fostering entrepreneurship and economic growth in regions like Jaipur. This approach not only supports individual businesses but also contributes to broader financial inclusion and gender equality in the MSME sector.
