Gujarat Police Sees Surge in Digital Traffic Fine Payments
The Gujarat Police has successfully collected more than Rs 18 lakh in traffic fines through the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) in a span of approximately three weeks. This initiative, which encourages digital payments for e-challans, has proven highly effective since its launch.
How the BBPS Payment System Works for Motorists
According to an official government release issued on Wednesday, this facility was launched by the state traffic branch in partnership with the State Bank of India. From October 1 to November 24, fines totaling a substantial Rs 18.05 lakh were collected against issued challans.
The system offers great convenience to motorists who have violated traffic rules. They can now clear their challans directly through popular platforms such as Google Pay, PhonePe, BHIM Pay, and SBI’s YONO app. To make a payment, users simply need to select 'State Traffic Branch, Gujarat' on any of these enabled platforms.
A Step Forward from Previous Digital Payment Methods
This marks a significant advancement from the payment options available in 2023. Previously, the 'One Nation One Challan' application allowed for fine payments via net banking, debit/credit cards, UPI, and Point-of-Sale (PoS) systems. The new integration with BBPS streamlines the process further, making it more accessible to the public.
The system is designed to allow those who have been penalized to clear their e-challans issued within the past 90 days. It is crucial to settle fines within this window, as unpaid challans subsequently move to the virtual court for further legal action.
The successful collection of over Rs 18 lakh demonstrates a positive public response to this digital governance initiative, promoting easier compliance with traffic regulations.
