Tragic Death of Ujjain Student in Canada Sparks Investigation
A 26-year-old student from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh has died in Canada following an alleged assault during a dispute among students earlier this month, according to his grieving family. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised concerns about the safety of Indian students abroad.
Victim Identified as Gurkirat Singh Manocha
The victim has been identified as Gurkirat Singh Manocha, a resident of Parshwanath City on Dewas Road in Ujjain. Gurkirat had traveled to Canada approximately 15 months ago to pursue higher education and was enrolled in a post-degree diploma program in business management at Northern Lights College in Fort St. John, British Columbia.
Family members revealed that the tragic incident occurred on March 14 near Charlie Lake, where Gurkirat reportedly became involved in a dispute with a group of youths. During the altercation, he sustained serious injuries that ultimately proved fatal. The young student was unmarried and had gone abroad specifically to further his education after completing his studies in India.
Family Learns of Tragedy Through Social Media
The family first learned about the incident through other Indian students in Canada who contacted them via social media platforms. This initial information was later confirmed through direct phone calls. Gurkirat's brother, Prabkirat Singh Manocha, who resides in Raipur, provided details about how the family received the devastating news.
"A friend of my brother called late at night and informed me about the attack," Prabkirat told media sources. "Later we received confirmation from his friends about what had happened. Police in Canada are investigating the case. They even sent us a photograph for identification and are keeping us informed about the process."
Official Response and Family's Plea
Ujjain collector Roshan Kumar Singh confirmed that authorities have been dispatched to the family's home to collect formal details and offer assistance in investigating the matter. "We were alerted by the media regarding the death of an Ujjain native in Canada," Singh stated, emphasizing the administration's commitment to supporting the bereaved family.
The family's primary concern now is repatriating Gurkirat's body to India. "We want our brother's body to be brought back to India so that we can perform his last rites in Ujjain," Prabkirat expressed, highlighting the cultural importance of proper funeral ceremonies.
Background of the Deceased Student
Gurkirat came from a business family in Ujjain, where his father, Gurjeet Singh Manocha, runs an FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) business. The young student's aspirations for international education and career advancement have been tragically cut short by this violent incident.
