Trump Announces US Navy Seizure of Iranian Cargo Ship TOUSKA

In a significant development amid heightened geopolitical tensions, former US President Donald Trump claimed on Sunday that the United States Navy has forcibly seized an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel named TOUSKA. According to Trump, the ship allegedly attempted to bypass a naval blockade near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Trump's Detailed Account on Truth Social

Trump elaborated on the incident through a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. He stated, "Today, an Iranian-flagged cargo ship named TOUSKA… tried to get past our Naval Blockade, and it did not go well for them." He provided further specifics, noting that the US Navy Guided Missile Destroyer USS SPRUANCE intercepted the TOUSKA in the Gulf of Oman.

The former president detailed that the destroyer issued a fair warning to the ship to stop, but the Iranian crew refused to comply. In response, Trump claimed, "our Navy ship stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engine room." He added that US Marines currently have custody of the vessel, which is under US Treasury Sanctions due to prior illegal activities, and authorities are inspecting its contents.

Iranian Media Presents Contradictory Version

Contrasting sharply with Trump's assertions, Iranian state-linked media has reported a different narrative. Citing the semi-official Mehr news agency, Al-Jazeera relayed that Iranian forces successfully foiled an alleged US attempt to seize an Iranian commercial vessel in the Sea of Oman.

The Iranian report claimed that "American terrorist forces deployed to the waters surrounding the Sea of Oman and opened fire on an Iranian merchant ship to force it to return to Iranian territorial waters." It further stated that with the timely intervention and rapid response of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval units, the Americans were compelled to retreat and flee the area. Notably, the Iranian account did not name the specific vessel involved.

Background of Escalating Tensions

This incident occurs against a backdrop of ongoing strain over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. Efforts to revive diplomatic talks between Washington and Tehran have been fraught with challenges. Earlier, questions arose regarding Trump's statement about US negotiators heading to Pakistan for another round of talks with Iran, as Tehran has not confirmed its participation in such discussions.

The conflicting reports underscore the volatile nature of US-Iran relations and the potential for miscalculation in these sensitive waters. While Trump's account emphasizes US enforcement actions, the Iranian narrative portrays a defensive success, highlighting the deep-seated mistrust and propaganda efforts on both sides.
