UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Condemns Conservative MP's Remarks on Muslim Prayer
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has launched a scathing attack on Conservative MP Nick Timothy in Parliament over his comments regarding Muslims praying at a public Open Iftar gathering in London's Trafalgar Square. Starmer accused the Conservative Party of harboring systemic issues with the Muslim community and demanded that Tory leader Kemi Badenoch immediately remove Timothy from the shadow cabinet.
Starmer's Fiery Parliamentary Address
Speaking with forceful conviction, Starmer stated that Timothy had explicitly suggested "that Muslims praying in public, including the mayor of London, practising his faith, are not welcome." The Prime Minister characterized Timothy's language as dangerous, declaring it was "straight from the Islamist playbook" and labeling the remarks "utterly appalling."
"If he was in my team, he'd be gone," Starmer asserted, directly challenging Badenoch. "She should denounce his comments and she should sack him."
Defending Britain's Religious Diversity
Starmer passionately defended the public expression of all faiths as a cornerstone of British society. He highlighted numerous religious celebrations that have taken place in the same iconic location.
"When I see religious events in Trafalgar Square, when I see Hindus celebrating Diwali, when I see Jews celebrating Hanukkah live, when I see Christians performing the passion of Christ or Muslims praying, that shows the great strength of our diverse city and country," he proclaimed.
The Labour leader pointedly noted a perceived double standard, adding, "I've never heard her party call out anything other than the Muslim events. It's only when Muslims are praying. The only conclusion is the Tory party has got a problem with Muslims."

The controversy erupted after Nick Timothy shared a video from the Open Iftar event organized by the Ramadan Tent Project, which facilitates public gatherings during Ramadan. Accompanying the video, Timothy wrote, "mass ritual prayer in public places is an act of domination," and insisted such events "shouldn't happen again."
These comments triggered immediate and widespread condemnation across the political spectrum:
- Independent MP Adnan Hussain labeled the remarks "disgraceful," questioning whether similar objections were ever raised for gatherings of other faiths.
- Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy accused Timothy of "fanning the flames of division."
- Labour deputy leader Lucy Powell described the reaction as "extreme."
However, Timothy received some support from within his own party, with certain Conservative figures defending his stance as upholding "British values."
