Secret Biolab Uncovered in Las Vegas Home, Linked to California Facility
A clandestine biological laboratory has been discovered in a suburban Las Vegas residence, raising significant concerns among officials about the United States' preparedness for hidden bioterror threats. The facility appears to be connected to a similar unauthorized operation in California, intensifying fears over national security vulnerabilities.
Police Raid Reveals Makeshift Lab and Illness Reports
On January 31, Las Vegas police conducted a raid on a five-bedroom house located in a quiet residential area. The action was prompted after several individuals who had stayed at the property became "deathly ill," according to reports from the Daily Mail. Inside the home, officers found a garage that had been converted into a makeshift biolab, equipped with multiple refrigerators, unknown liquids stored in bottles and jugs, and various laboratory-style apparatus.
Authorities collected over 1,000 samples from the site, which were sent to the National Bioforensic Analysis Centre for testing. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact substances present in the lab.
Arrest and Charges in Las Vegas Case
The property manager, 55-year-old Ori Solomon, was arrested following the raid. Police reported discovering a cache of weapons in the house in addition to the lab equipment. Solomon has been charged with disposing and discharging hazardous waste and, due to his visa status, being a prohibited person in possession of firearms. His legal representative has stated that Solomon was not involved with the laboratory operations.
Connection to Larger Illegal Biolab in California
The Las Vegas discovery is directly linked to a more extensive investigation in Reedley, California, where an illegal biolab was uncovered in late 2022 and thoroughly investigated in 2023. At that facility, local officials found:
- Thousands of vials containing biological substances labeled with pathogens such as malaria, HIV, Covid-19, and Ebola.
- Approximately 1,000 lab mice, believed to have been used for testing purposes.
This Reedley lab was associated with Jia Bei Zhu, a Chinese national who faces federal charges related to the California operation and an unrelated scheme involving the sale of unapproved medical tests. Court documents revealed that Zhu received large, unexplained payments from Chinese banks while managing these clandestine activities.
Background and Phone Records Link Cases
Jia Bei Zhu entered the United States under an alias after fleeing Canada in 2015, where he had been fined for theft of American intellectual property. Phone records indicate that Zhu, who remains in custody, made nearly 400 calls to the Las Vegas property over the past year. However, his attorney claims he was unaware of any illegal activities at that location.
FBI Investigation and Findings
To date, there is no direct evidence that the substances found in either the Las Vegas or California labs were being developed into biological weapons. The FBI has stated that many materials recovered from the Las Vegas property appeared to be connected to the manufacture of:
- Covid test kits
- Pregnancy test kits
- Influenza vaccines
Some samples could not be tested due to degradation, leading the FBI to conclude their investigation without further action.
This incident underscores ongoing concerns about the potential for hidden bioterror threats within the U.S., prompting calls for enhanced surveillance and regulatory measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
