OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's San Francisco Residence Targeted in Molotov Cocktail Attack
Last week, the San Francisco home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was attacked by a man who threw a Molotov cocktail at the residence. The San Francisco Police Department swiftly arrested the accused, identified as 20-year-old Daniel Moreno-Gama, who is now facing serious charges of murder in connection with the incident.
Defense Claims Suspect Was in Acute Mental Health Crisis During Incident
According to an AP report, Moreno-Gama's lawyer has asserted that the accused was experiencing a severe mental health crisis at the time of the attack. During his first court appearance following the arrest, Moreno-Gama's public defender, Diamond Ward, argued that the charges are excessively severe. Ward stated that Moreno-Gama, who is autistic, was not in a stable mental state when the incident occurred.
Ward described her client as going through an "acute mental health crisis" and criticized the prosecution's approach. "It is unfair and is unjust for the San Francisco district attorney and the federal government to fearmonger and to exploit the mental illness of a vulnerable, young man by turning a vandalism case into an attempted murder, life exposure case to gain support of a billionaire, and to get political points at the expense of true justice for everyone involved," Ward said in court. She emphasized that "Regardless of a victim's status, they all deserve justice and they all deserve safety."
When questioned by the judge about whether he agreed to continue his arraignment, Moreno-Gama responded softly with "yes." San Francisco Judge Kenneth Wine ordered that he be held without bail, and his arraignment has been scheduled for May 5.
San Francisco District Attorney Disputes Defense Claims, Calls It a Targeted Attack
San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins has strongly disputed the defense's claims that Moreno-Gama was overcharged. Jenkins stated that Moreno-Gama carried out a "targeted attack on Mr. Altman" and that prosecutors possess substantial evidence to support the charges. She affirmed that prosecutors would act identically whether the victim was a "billionaire or a CEO or any average San Franciscan."
Jenkins described this as a strong case, noting, "We have been trying our best to address these issues and get him effective treatment, and we are very concerned for his well-being." According to court filings, authorities revealed that Moreno-Gama has expressed intense hatred of artificial intelligence in his writings, describing AI as a danger to humanity and warning of "impending extinction."
FBI San Francisco Acting Special Agent in Charge Matt Cobo, as quoted in the AP report, emphasized the premeditated nature of the attack: "This was not spontaneous. This was planned, targeted and extremely serious." The incident has drawn significant attention due to Altman's high-profile role in the AI industry and the violent nature of the assault.
