Odia-American Civil Rights Attorney Rahul Garabadu Announces Georgia State Senate Bid
Rahul Garabadu, a second-generation Odia immigrant who has built his life and career in the United States, has officially declared his candidacy for the Georgia State Senate District 7 election scheduled for later this year. In an exclusive interview, Garabadu outlined his ambitious platform and shared his motivations for entering the political arena.
Motivation and Political Vision
What inspired your decision to run for the Georgia State Senate?
"I am running for the state Senate because District 7 desperately needs a fighter who will staunchly defend our community's core values," Garabadu explained. "As the son of immigrants, I have dedicated my entire professional career to advancing civil rights. This includes significant legal battles such as suing the state to ensure fair electoral maps and holding authorities accountable for dangerous jail conditions."
Garabadu emphasized that his campaign will focus on three critical issues: tackling the escalating cost of living, providing robust protection for immigrant communities, and guaranteeing that every Georgian has access to affordable, high-quality healthcare. If elected, he would make history as the first Odia and the first Indian-American to serve in the Georgia State Senate.
Championing Immigrant Rights and Community Support
How do you plan to advocate for immigrant communities specifically?
"Having grown up as the son of immigrants, I understand firsthand that our immigrant communities form the very backbone of Georgia's economic and social strength," Garabadu stated passionately. "In the state Senate, I will serve as a tireless civil rights champion, actively opposing any government overreach that threatens the safety and stability of our communities."
His approach is firmly rooted in his established record as a civil rights attorney. "I have already demonstrated that I am not afraid to confront powerful interests," he noted. "In the legislature, I will fight to ensure that state and local resources are never weaponized to wreak havoc upon our families and destabilize our neighborhoods."
Addressing Immigrant Challenges and Past Advocacy
What are the primary problems immigrants face in the US, and how have you helped them previously?
Garabadu pointed to the Trump administration's recent focus on mass deportations as a major source of distress. "This policy has created a pervasive atmosphere of fear that has torn families apart and destabilized our local workforce," he said. "Here in Georgia, these aggressive immigration raids have not made us safer. Immigrants are fundamental to our economy—from our agricultural heartlands to our booming tech hubs. They are our entrepreneurs, essential workers, and taxpayers who revitalize our communities and embody the very best of the American Dream."
Reflecting on his career, Garabadu added, "My entire professional life as a civil rights lawyer has been about representing the many against the powerful few. I am committed to continuing that vital work as a member of the Georgia State Senate."
Perspective on Trump's Policies Toward India
How do you view the Trump administration's policy approach toward India?
"As a candidate for the Georgia State Senate, my perspective on international relations is always filtered through how those policies impact the families and the economy of our district," Garabadu clarified. "Georgia, and specifically Senate District 7, is home to a vibrant and growing South Asian community. Policies that prioritize mass deportation or implement sudden visa suspensions for dozens of countries directly harm our communities here. When the administration creates a climate of uncertainty for our immigrant communities, it negatively affects us all."
