Swiss Ski Resort Fire Kills 40, Injures 100+ at New Year Party
New Year Fire at Swiss Bar Kills 40, Over 100 Injured

A horrific fire ripped through a crowded bar in the luxury Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana on New Year's Eve, resulting in a catastrophic loss of life and injuries. The blaze, which erupted at the popular Le Constellation bar, has claimed the lives of at least 40 people and left over 100 individuals with serious injuries, many suffering severe burns.

New Year Celebration Turns into Nightmare

The incident occurred as revellers gathered to ring in the New Year at the well-known venue. Initial reports from Swiss media and authorities suggest that the fire may have been sparked by pyrotechnics used during a concert inside the bar. Pyrotechnics involve combustible materials to create visual and sound effects. While the exact cause is still under investigation, police have indicated it was likely not an act of arson.

The Le Constellation bar, a favourite among tourists, had a capacity of about 300 people indoors and an additional 40 on its terrace. The intensity of the fire was such that identifying many victims has been difficult due to the severity of their burns. Regional newspaper Le Nouvelliste reported sources describing "a heavy toll."

Massive Emergency Response and Aftermath

Swiss authorities launched a massive rescue operation in response to the tragedy. Ten helicopters and forty ambulances were mobilised to the scene. Police, firefighters, and rescue teams rushed to the popular resort area. The Valais hospital's intensive care unit was quickly overwhelmed, forcing the transfer of patients to other facilities.

The area around the bar has been sealed off from the public, and authorities have imposed a no-fly zone over Crans-Montana to facilitate emergency operations. Fears remain that the death toll could rise further given the fire's ferocity. Authorities have confirmed that some of the victims are foreign nationals.

Eyewitness Account and Ongoing Investigation

A tourist from New York captured the terrifying scene on video, describing bright orange flames pouring from the building. He told AFP he witnessed people running and screaming in the dark amidst the chaos.

While the investigation into the precise cause is ongoing, the focus remains on the suspected pyrotechnics. The police have not yet released an official cause. For families seeking information, the authorities have established a dedicated helpline: 0848 112 117.

Crans-Montana is a famed ski and hiking destination that regularly hosts World Cup races. The ski resort is operated by Vail Resorts Inc. This tragedy has cast a shadow over the festive period in the normally tranquil Alpine region.
