Mamdani-Endorsed Progressives Win Primaries
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is projected to have all three of his endorsed candidates win their Democratic House primaries on Tuesday, according to CNN. The results mark a significant early test of Mamdani's political influence just six months into his tenure and offer a preview of ideological battles ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
Challengers Defeat Incumbents
Progressives Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier, all backed by Mamdani, were projected winners. Lander and Chevalier defeated incumbent Democratic representatives Dan Goldman in the 10th District and Adriano Espaillat in the 13th District, respectively. In the open 7th District, Valdez succeeded retiring 17-term Representative Nydia Velazquez, beating Antonio Reynoso, who was backed by Velazquez.
Mamdani's Strategic Endorsements
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, raised the stakes by endorsing candidates in three House races, including two challengers to incumbents. The districts are expected to remain Democratic in November, making the primaries a key battleground between progressive and establishment factions. Lander, a former New York City Comptroller and one of Mamdani's mayoral rivals, became an ally in opposing former Governor Andrew Cuomo and later validated Mamdani among Jewish voters.
Broader Primary Landscape
The New York primaries were part of a larger Tuesday election that included contests in Maryland, Utah, and Republican gubernatorial runoffs in South Carolina. The outcomes underscore the internal struggle within the Democratic Party as it prepares for the 2028 presidential election.
