Indian Professional's US Visa Struggle Highlights H-1B Lottery Uncertainty

An Indian Redditor has shared the professional challenges he faces in the United States, emphasizing that his career stability hinges on being selected in the H-1B visa lottery. The H-1B registration for 2027 opens on March 4, but the individual revealed that his company has already informed him it will not sponsor his visa, even though it would not require the typical $100,000 fee since he is already residing in the US.

Journey of Persistence and Setbacks

"I arrived in the US in 2021," the Redditor recounted. "I was fortunate to secure an internship, worked extremely hard, and eventually earned a full-time offer. However, as layoffs began across the industry, my job offer was rescinded just as I was about to graduate in December. With very little time left, I pushed myself harder than ever and was able to secure another full-time opportunity." Despite his efforts, he was not selected in his third H-1B lottery attempt. To continue living and working for the same company in the US, he pursued another master's degree.

Company's Decision and Personal Realization

Just a month before the H-1B lottery registration period, the Redditor received news that his company would not sponsor him due to various reasons, despite the absence of significant sponsorship fees in his case. "That moment made me realize that loyalty to an organization does not always guarantee stability," he said. "Sometimes, despite your dedication, you can still be left behind." He also mentioned that friends suggested marrying a US citizen to obtain a visa, but he rejected this idea, calling it "both unethical and illegal."

Social Media Reactions and Broader Implications

Other Redditors commented that the "American dream is dead," and the H-1B visa is merely a matter of luck. Many social media users shared stories of moving to Canada even with valid H-1B visas, citing no future for H-1B workers in the US. One user commented, "Literally got an email from HR that they wouldn't be pursuing my H1B this year. I'm in the same boat as you, didn't get selected 3 times but I moved to Canada instead. I've been here for the last 8 years. All my friends are in the US. I feel very alone here." This highlights growing concerns about immigration policies and career security for international professionals in the US.
