The Rajouri administration, in collaboration with the Indian Army, organised a walkathon from Bhawani village to Jhangar on Friday to mark 'Jhangar Day' and honour Brigadier Mohammad Usman, known as the 'Lion of Nowshera'. The event saw participation from various sections of society, including students, teachers, volunteers, self-help groups, anganwadi workers, and government officials.
Walkathon Flagged Off by Deputy Commissioner
The march was flagged off by Rajouri Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Sharma, who led the participants along the route. Holding the Tricolour high and chanting patriotic slogans, the crowd marched with enthusiasm. The walkathon aimed to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of Brigadier Usman, who attained martyrdom on July 3, 1948, while defending Jhangar during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1947–48.
Tributes at Memorial
At the Brigadier Mohammad Usman Memorial, floral tributes were paid to the valiant soldier. Brigadier Usman is remembered for his fearless leadership in the defence of Nowshera and the recapture of Jhangar. His indomitable spirit and unwavering devotion to the nation remain a shining example of courage and selfless service, according to the organisers.
Deputy Commissioner's Address
Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Sharma highlighted the importance of remembering the sacrifices of brave soldiers. He urged the younger generation to draw inspiration from their patriotism, dedication, and sense of duty towards the nation. The event underscored the collective commitment to uphold the values of national unity and selfless service.

The walkathon concluded with a pledge by all participants to uphold the values of patriotism, national unity, and selfless service, while carrying forward the glorious legacy of Brigadier Mohammad Usman.
