Tragic Death of Indian Engineering Student in California After Hit-and-Run Accident
In a heartbreaking development, Nilam Shinde, a 35-year-old final-year Master of Science student in engineering at California State University, has passed away after being struck by a speeding vehicle in February 2025. The tragic incident left her in a comatose condition, and she succumbed on March 28, as confirmed by her grieving relatives.
Funeral and Noble Organ Donation
Her funeral service was conducted on Tuesday at Mount Vernon Memorial Park in California, adhering to Hindu rituals. In a poignant act of generosity, Nilam's skin and cornea were extracted for donation following explicit permission from her father, Tanaji Shinde, who resides in Umbraj, near Karad in Maharashtra's Satara district.
Details of the Fatal Accident and Visa Struggles
The accident occurred on the evening of February 14, merely two days after the first death anniversary of Nilam's mother, while she was on her daily walk. This devastating event plunged her family into turmoil, particularly her 69-year-old father, Tanaji, who faced significant challenges in obtaining a visa to travel to the United States.
After the issue was highlighted to the Indian government, primarily through the efforts of MP Supriya Sule, Tanaji finally secured his visa. Accompanied by Nilam's cousin, he traveled to the US, where Nilam was receiving treatment at the UC Davis Medical Centre in Sacramento.
Father's Return and Final Moments
Upon the expiration of his two-month visa, Tanaji returned to India, entrusting the care of his daughter to a relative living approximately 250 kilometers from California, who visited her every weekend. Tragically, on March 28, the hospital administration informed the family of Nilam's passing.
Due to ongoing conflicts and health issues, Tanaji was unable to make the journey to the US for a final farewell. When approached about organ donation by the hospital, he immediately consented, leading to the extraction of Nilam's skin and cornea. The funeral was subsequently scheduled for 1 PM local time on Tuesday.
Nilam Shinde's Academic and Professional Journey
Nilam was a highly accomplished individual. She completed her Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science from the Sinhgad Institute in Pune, followed by a prestigious one-year internship at NASA. She had enrolled in a four-year MS program and was in the final year of her studies, showcasing her dedication and potential in the field of engineering.
Sanjay Kadam, Nilam's maternal uncle, expressed the family's profound loss and highlighted the swift decision for organ donation, reflecting Nilam's spirit of giving even in death.
