Dubai Police Recover Dh50,000 Gold from Trash for Indian Family
Dubai, renowned for its fast-paced lifestyle and stringent regulations, is also a city where small miracles unfold daily. In a recent heartwarming incident, an Indian family experienced such a miracle when a pouch containing gold valued at Dh50,000 was accidentally discarded as trash, only to be returned to them within a few days, showcasing the remarkable efficiency of Dubai's police system.
A Costly Mistake During a Family Visit
Kamini Kannan, who had resided in the UAE for 23 years before relocating to India in 2021, was visiting Dubai to attend a wedding. With gold prices on the rise, she decided to inspect her personal collection. As reported by Khaleej Times, she transferred four 22-karat gold coins, each weighing 8 grams, along with a 50-gram 24-karat gold bar from an old pouch to a temporary one on her dining table. Later, while cleaning up, her son inadvertently threw the pouch into the garbage, unaware of its precious contents.
"Those items are worth about Dh50,000 today," Kamini told Khaleej Times, highlighting the significant financial value of the lost gold.
Initial Despair and Lost Hope
The next morning, Kamini realized the pouch was missing. Her son confessed to the accidental disposal, and the family immediately alerted their building's security team. Despite this, they held little hope of recovery. "If it's in the trash, that means it's gone," Kamini stated in the report, reflecting the family's initial resignation to the loss.
Police Intervention Turns the Tide
Three days later, Abhimanyu, Kamini's son, received an unexpected phone call that changed everything. "He said that there was someone asking about the things we lost. Turns out, it was the police," Abhimanyu recounted to Khaleej Times. He met police officers at the building reception, where he learned that a garbage collector had discovered the gold in the trash and taken it to the gold souk. When questioned about the find, the collector confirmed, "He told them that he found it in the garbage," Abhimanyu recalled.
Dubai's Efficient Tracking System Impresses
Abhimanyu was deeply impressed by the organized process employed by Dubai authorities. "It seems they have a whole system to track the garbage. They know what bag comes from where," he said, as quoted in the report. He then proceeded to Naif Police Station with photographs of the gold, purchase bills, and proof of ownership to verify the claim.
"All I had to do was take photos of the gold, bills and proof to show that it was my mum's," Abhimanyu explained. Although the verification process took several hours, he described it as seamless and praised the police officers for being 'incredibly kind' throughout the ordeal.
Dubai's Strong Record in Recovering Lost Items
This incident adds to Dubai's well-established reputation for assisting residents and visitors in recovering lost belongings. From taxi drivers returning wallets to airport staff locating misplaced luggage, such stories have become an integral part of the city's daily life, reinforcing its image as a safe and trustworthy destination.
The successful recovery of the Dh50,000 gold pouch underscores the effectiveness of Dubai's integrated systems and the honesty of its citizens, turning a potential financial disaster into a testament to urban efficiency and community integrity.
