Tragic Suicide of Chennai Student Following College Detention
An 18-year-old college student in Chennai died by suicide at his Kodambakkam residence on Friday, just one day after being detained by his college for using a mobile phone during a semester examination. The incident has sparked allegations of mental harassment against the college administration by the grieving family.
Details of the College Incident
The student, identified as Vasudevan, was a second-year BCA student at a private college in Ramapuram. According to his mother Geetha's complaint, the tragic sequence began on November 6 when Vasudevan was caught using his phone during his computer programming examination.
College staff detained him in a separate room from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM, during which he was allegedly denied both food and water. Geetha claims her son faced mental harassment from college staff throughout this three-hour detention period.
Family's Account and Police Response
"He was sent home with instructions to appear on a video call once he reached home. He returned anxious and told me he was held in isolation and questioned by the staff. He seemed deeply distressed," Geetha stated in her official complaint.
When Geetha, who has been living separately from her husband for 15 years, returned home, she discovered her son had died by hanging. The Kodambakkam police subsequently sent the body to the government ESI Hospital in KK Nagar for post-mortem and registered a case of unnatural death.
Both parents have filed complaints - Geetha directly accusing the college coordinator and administration of driving her son to suicide, while father Murugan has demanded a detailed investigation into what transpired during the detention.
Ongoing Investigation
The Kodambakkam police have initiated inquiries and visited the college campus on Friday. Authorities are currently in the process of securing CCTV footage from the college and recovering Vasudevan's phone, which remains with the college administration.
Police have registered a case and are thoroughly examining all circumstances that led to the young student's tragic death, as the educational institution faces serious allegations regarding its treatment of students during examination violations.
