The required pressure drop for bombogenesis varies by location. Near the latitude of New York City, a decrease of roughly 17 to 18 millibars in one day qualifies as bombogenesis. Further north, the threshold is higher. The current storm has definitively met these criteria, explaining its exceptional intensity.

Utility companies are reporting extensive power outages across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. According to FOX News, more than 250,000 customers are currently without electricity, with New Jersey experiencing the highest concentration of outages at over 100,000 affected customers.
The combination of wet, heavy snow and powerful wind gusts is bringing down tree branches and power lines throughout the affected areas. Restoration crews are working in extremely challenging conditions, and complete power restoration may take considerable time as snow continues to fall and winds remain strong.
