Israel has confirmed that its troops are operating up to 10 kilometers inside Lebanese territory, a deployment that continues despite a recent accord between the United States and Iran aimed at de-escalating regional tensions.
Military Stance on Deployment
The Israeli military stated that the deployment was dictated by operational needs and that troops remained stationed in their designated area of operations. The statement emphasized that the presence is not a new incursion but part of ongoing security measures along the border.
US-Iran Accord Context
The announcement comes shortly after the US and Iran reached a preliminary agreement to reduce hostilities in the region. However, Israeli officials have indicated that the accord does not alter their security calculus, particularly regarding threats from Hezbollah and other Iran-backed groups operating in southern Lebanon.
Lebanese officials have condemned the Israeli presence as a violation of sovereignty, while the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has called for restraint from both sides.
This development underscores the fragile nature of the US-Iran deal and the complex dynamics of the West Asia region, where multiple actors pursue conflicting security interests.
