The head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog indicated on Wednesday that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors will visit Iranian nuclear enrichment sites, a critical element of the interim agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at ending the war.
Grossi's Statement in Tokyo
IAEA Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi made the remarks in Tokyo, stating that the inspections are imminent. "Whether this happens the day after tomorrow or in one week or in 10 days, it's important, but not essential," Grossi told journalists. "This is going to happen."
Dispute Over Bombed Enrichment Sites
On Tuesday, Iran and the United States disagreed over whether bombed enrichment sites would be subject to inspection. This issue is central to the deal, which requires Iran's uranium stockpile to be "downblended" from highly enriched levels. The IAEA's verification role is crucial for ensuring compliance.
Impact on the Interim Deal
The inspections are a key component of the interim agreement, which seeks to de-escalate tensions and prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Grossi's upbeat tone signals progress despite the recent disputes. The IAEA has long sought access to all Iranian nuclear facilities to monitor enrichment activities.
