The Indian Air Force's Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT) is set to perform an aerobatic display over the Somnath Temple on May 10 and 11, commemorating the temple's 75th anniversary, as announced by the defence ministry's public relations officer (PRO).
Aerobatic Display Details
The six-aircraft formation will execute synchronized aerial maneuvers using Hawk Mk-132 jet trainers along the Somnath coastline. The event is anticipated to attract visitors, aviation enthusiasts, and local residents.
About Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team
Established in 1996, SKAT ranks among the world's elite military aerobatic teams, having performed over 800 air displays across India. The team has also represented the Indian Air Force at international air shows in Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, China, and the UAE.
The aircraft are license-manufactured in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). During formations, pilots maintain close separation distances while executing coordinated maneuvers requiring extensive training and precision flying.
Team Composition and Innovations
The team comprises 13 pilots, led by Group Captain Ajay Dasarathi, a Su-30 MKI pilot, with Wing Commander Tejeshwar Singh as deputy leader. According to the release, the aircraft have recently been equipped with indigenous colored smoke pods developed at the Indian Air Force's base repair depot in Nashik. This system enables the jets to emit saffron, white, and green smoke trails during performances.
Broader Celebrations
The defence PRO stated that the display is part of broader commemorative events for the temple's 75th anniversary celebrations.
