US Begins Military Pullback from Middle East Amid Rising Iran Tensions
The United States has started pulling some military personnel out of important bases across the Middle East. This move comes as tensions with Iran escalate dramatically. The situation follows a deadly crackdown on protests inside Iran and renewed threats of American military intervention.
Precautionary Withdrawals from Key Bases
Two diplomatic sources confirmed to AFP that some personnel received advice to leave the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar by Wednesday evening. A US official described this action to CNN as a precautionary measure. The official stressed it does not represent an ordered evacuation.
Al Udeid stands as the largest US military base in the Middle East. It typically hosts approximately 10,000 American troops. Reuters reported that Washington initiated withdrawals from multiple regional bases following warnings from Tehran.
Iran Issues Stern Warnings to US Allies
Iran responded with strong warnings of its own. A senior Iranian official stated that any American strike would trigger attacks on US bases throughout the region. The official specifically mentioned that neighboring countries hosting American troops received notice they would become targets if Washington attacks Iran.
Tehran has urged US allies to prevent any American assault on Iranian territory. The warning extends to US bases located in countries including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey.
Trump's Threats and Iran's Defiance
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened intervention in Iran. His warnings intensified after reports indicated a soaring death toll from the ongoing crackdown. In a CBS News interview, Trump promised very strong action if Iran executes detained protesters.
Iran's judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei signaled swift trials and potential executions during remarks aired on state television. His comments appeared to directly challenge Trump's warning about consequences for such actions.
Human Toll and Public Response
Activists report at least 2,571 people killed during the crackdown. They describe this figure as unprecedented in recent decades. The Human Rights Activists News Agency stated more than 18,100 people have faced detention.
On Wednesday, tens of thousands of mourners gathered near Tehran University. They attended a mass funeral for security forces and civilians killed during the unrest. Chants blaming the United States for Iran's economic problems echoed through the crowd. Many participants shouted Death to America during the gathering.
