President Donald Trump stated on Monday that any potential deal with Iran will be a good and proper one, distinguishing it from the Obama-era agreement which he claimed gave Tehran massive amounts of cash and a clear path to a nuclear weapon. Speaking to reporters, Trump acknowledged that the deal is not even fully negotiated yet and urged critics not to listen to losers who are critical about something they know nothing about. This comes amid ongoing US-Israeli strikes on Iran that began on February 28, which have severely curtailed shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Fuel Prices in India Hiked for Fourth Time
Fuel prices in India were raised for the fourth time in less than two weeks on Monday, with petrol becoming costlier by Rs 2.61 per litre and diesel by Rs 2.71 per litre. In Delhi, petrol rose to Rs 102.12 per litre from Rs 99.51, while diesel increased to Rs 95.20 from Rs 92.49. Cumulative increases have neared Rs 7.5 per litre since hikes resumed on May 15 after an extended freeze. The surge is attributed to crude oil prices rising over 50% since the US-Israeli strikes on Iran.
NPT Review Conference Fails to Reach Consensus
The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference concluded without a consensus final document for the third consecutive time. The United States expressed deep regret and criticized states for not taking Iran's threat to global nonproliferation seriously. Washington emphasized that states parties cannot turn a blind eye to Iran's noncompliance with its safeguards agreement with the IAEA and its escalating nuclear activities without credible civilian justification.
US Condemns Hezbollah's Call to Overthrow Lebanese Government
Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned Hezbollah's reckless call to overthrow Lebanon's democratically elected government. He accused the Iran-backed militant group of ignoring calls to cease attacks and respect a ceasefire, instead continuing to fire on Israeli positions and moving fighters into southern Lebanon. Rubio stated that the era in which a terrorist group held an entire nation hostage is coming to an end and that the United States stands firmly with the legitimate Government of Lebanon.
Japan's Nikkei Breaches 65,000 Mark
Japan's Nikkei share average surpassed the 65,000 threshold for the first time ever on Monday, driven by increased risk appetite amid growing optimism for a potential agreement to end the Iran war. Stranded LNG Tankers and Oil Ship Exit Hormuz
Two liquefied natural gas tankers exited the Strait of Hormuz heading to Pakistan and China, while a supertanker with Iraqi crude for China left the Gulf after being stranded for nearly three months. The vessels are among a handful exiting the Gulf this month via a transit route ordered by Iran. LNG tanker Fuwairit is expected to discharge cargo in Pakistan on Tuesday, while Al Rayyan carries cargo for China expected on June 27. VLCC Eagle Verona is expected to reach China's Ningbo port on June 12 with nearly 2 million barrels of Basrah crude.
With military signalling, diplomatic backchanneling, economic strain, and nuclear anxieties unfolding simultaneously, the region now appears caught between the possibility of a fragile diplomatic breakthrough and the risk of a much larger confrontation.
