Ukraine's growing concern over Russia's expanding missile campaign has now reached Washington. In a rare diplomatic move, President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that he sent an urgent letter to both U.S. President Donald Trump and members of Congress, warning that Ukraine is running low on critical air-defense missiles.
Massive Russian Attack on Kyiv
The appeal comes after one of the largest Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv in recent months. Ukrainian officials say Russia deployed a mix of advanced weapons, including Oreshnik, Iskander, Kinzhal and Zircon missiles, alongside large numbers of attack drones.
Zelensky Seeks Additional Support
Zelensky is seeking additional Patriot systems and anti-ballistic missile support as Kyiv struggles to counter increasingly complex Russian strikes targeting the Ukrainian capital and other regions. The situation has become dire, with Ukrainian air defenses stretched thin.
In his letter, Zelensky emphasized the urgent need for more sophisticated air defense systems to protect civilian infrastructure and military assets. The White House has yet to issue an official response, but sources indicate that the matter is being discussed at the highest levels.
The Russian missile campaign has intensified in recent weeks, with Moscow employing a combination of cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and drones to overwhelm Ukrainian defenses. The Oreshnik missile, in particular, has caused significant concern due to its advanced capabilities.
Ukrainian officials have repeatedly called on Western allies to provide more air defense systems, but deliveries have been slow. The latest appeal to Trump and Congress underscores the gravity of the situation as Ukraine faces its most severe aerial threat since the start of the war.
Meanwhile, Russian forces continue to press their advantage, launching strikes on energy infrastructure and residential areas. The Ukrainian military has managed to intercept some of the incoming missiles, but the sheer volume of attacks has made it difficult to maintain effective coverage.
The international community is watching closely as the conflict enters a new phase. Zelensky's direct appeal to the United States highlights Ukraine's reliance on American support, and the response from Washington could have significant implications for the course of the war.
