An intruder from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) was apprehended while crossing the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir's Uri sector, the Indian Army confirmed on Sunday. Unconfirmed reports and a social media video suggest that the intrusion may have been motivated by a romantic relationship with a local woman.
Identification and Arrest
Sources identified the intruder as Zeeshan Ahmad Mir, a 22-year-old resident of Painkadi village in PoK's Muzaffarabad district. He was caught late Saturday evening as he attempted to cross through the Haji Peer range in Uri's Silikote area. Following his arrest, local authorities detained Iram Bano, a woman from Tilawari village near the LoC, who is suspected to be the person Mir intended to meet.
Social Media Video
Shortly after the incident, a video went viral on social media platforms. In the footage, the couple appears to identify themselves while responding to questions from an unseen individual, believed to be a security official. The video has fueled speculation about the motive behind the crossing.
Police Confirmation
A police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the case appears to be driven by love. The officer revealed that the two families on either side of the border are related, and the couple had been communicating through social media. Mir's family originally hailed from Uri but migrated to PoK several decades ago, the officer added.
Army's Response
The Indian Army stated that its troops exercised restraint while challenging Mir and apprehended him in a "surgical" manner. In an official statement, the Army said, "The intruder has been handed over to the Jammu and Kashmir Police for further legal proceedings." The incident highlights ongoing security challenges along the LoC, even as authorities handle cases that may involve personal motives rather than militant activity.
