The incident occurred in the Uri sector of Baramulla district, where the man was intercepted by security forces.
The Pakistani national, identified as 22-year-old Ali Khan from Rawalpindi, had been in contact with a woman from Kashmir for several months via the popular messaging app. According to officials, the two had never met in person but grew close through frequent chats and video calls. The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, reportedly encouraged him to visit her, leading to his risky decision to cross the heavily fortified border.
Khan was apprehended by the Indian Army near the LoC on Tuesday morning. He was found without any weapons or suspicious materials, and initial investigations suggest he acted purely out of romantic intentions. Security forces are questioning him to ascertain if he had any ulterior motives or connections to militant groups.
The incident has raised concerns about the ease with which individuals can be influenced through social media platforms. Local authorities have urged people to be cautious about sharing personal information online, especially with individuals across the border. The woman involved is also being questioned by police to understand the nature of their relationship and whether she was aware of his plans.
This is not the first such case; in 2023, a Pakistani man crossed the LoC to meet a woman he met on Facebook, and similar incidents have been reported in the past. Khan is currently in custody and will be handed over to the local police for further investigation. Diplomatic channels may be involved to facilitate his return to Pakistan, depending on the findings of the inquiry.
