Pakistan Witnesses Sharp 43% Monthly Increase in Combat-Related Fatalities
Security data released this week reveals a concerning escalation of violence in Pakistan, with combat-related deaths surging dramatically in January. According to figures from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), the country recorded 361 fatalities linked to conflict during the month, representing a substantial 43% increase compared to the previous month.
Breakdown of Casualties and Regional Impact
The detailed casualty breakdown provided by the Islamabad-based think tank shows that militants accounted for the majority of deaths at 242, followed by 73 civilians and 46 security personnel. Additionally, at least 135 people sustained injuries during the violent incidents, with civilians again bearing the heaviest burden at 71 injured, alongside 52 security personnel and 12 militants.
PICSS documented 87 militant attacks across Pakistan in January, marking a significant 28% rise from the 68 incidents reported in December 2025. The northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa experienced the highest concentration of violence with 58 separate incidents—38 occurring in mainland districts and 20 in tribal areas.
Balochistan Emerges as Epicenter of Conflict
The restive southwestern province of Balochistan followed with 27 attacks, while Punjab reported two targeted incidents. Balochistan emerged as the primary theater of militant violence and security operations, recording its highest monthly militant death toll since the current insurgency began in 2001.
While the province remained relatively calm for most of January, violence surged dramatically during the final two days of the month. Coordinated attacks by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) across at least 12 locations, followed by intensified security operations, placed the province at the center of the conflict. At least 172 militants were killed in Balochistan, with the majority of these fatalities occurring in the last two days of January.
Security Operations and Arrests
Security forces conducted extensive operations throughout the month, arresting at least 60 suspected militants. In a significant development in Punjab, authorities detained 53 militants, with 48 of these arrests taking place in Lahore—the provincial capital and Pakistan's second-largest city.
Militant groups remained active in kidnapping operations, abducting eight individuals during January. Meanwhile, several regions reported no militant activity, with Sindh, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), Islamabad, and the Gilgit-Baltistan region experiencing no reported attacks during the month according to the PICSS data.
The sharp increase in violence across multiple provinces underscores the ongoing security challenges facing Pakistan, particularly in border regions where militant activity has historically been concentrated. The data suggests a shifting pattern of conflict with Balochistan experiencing unprecedented levels of violence despite previous periods of relative calm.
