TikTok Video Sparks Religious Tension in Nepal's Birgunj, Curfew Extended
Nepal's Birgunj curfew extended after TikTok video triggers unrest

A controversial TikTok video has ignited serious religious tensions in Birgunj, Nepal, prompting local authorities to extend a strict curfew. The situation remains volatile near the border with India's Bihar state.

Curfew Imposed and Extended Amid Rising Tensions

The Parsa District Administration Office first imposed a curfew in Birgunj on Monday, January 5, 2026 (2082.09.21), from 6:00 PM to 8:00 AM the following day. However, as tensions failed to subside, the administration extended the prohibitory order. According to a fresh order issued under Section 6 (a) of the Local Administration Act, 2028, the curfew has been continued until 1:00 PM on Tuesday, January 6, 2026 (2082.09.22).

The order specifically restricts movement and bans all forms of gatherings, processions, demonstrations, and meetings within a defined area of Birgunj Metropolitan City. The boundaries of the curfew zone are marked by four pillars: Bus Park, Nagwa, Inarwa (East), Sirsia River (West), Gandak Chowk (North), and Shankaracharya Gate (South).

Strict Security Measures and Origins of the Unrest

The administration has issued a stern warning to the public. The order explicitly states that security personnel are authorized to shoot on sight during the curfew period. Residents are urged not to leave their homes except for essential purposes and to coordinate with security forces if movement is necessary. Essential services, including ambulances, fire engines, health workers, media, and diplomatic vehicles, are exempt from the restrictions.

The unrest traces its origins to a TikTok video uploaded by two youths, Haider Ansari and Amanat Ansari, from Janakpur in Dhanusha district. Locals alleged the video hurt religious sentiments, leading to the duo being handed over to the police. The dispute escalated rapidly after a mosque in ward 6 of Kamala Municipality, Dhanusha, was vandalized.

Protests Spread and Authorities Struggle to Contain Situation

In response, demonstrators in Birgunj took to the streets, staging rallies, burning tires, and chanting slogans. Despite the initial curfew order issued on Monday, both groups involved in the dispute held simultaneous demonstrations in defiance, forcing authorities to enforce a full curfew to restore order.

The conflict, which began in Dhanusha and Parsa districts, gained momentum and spread further through TikTok, mobilizing people from both sides over religious and communal concerns. The situation highlights the potent role social media can play in inflaming regional tensions, especially in sensitive border areas.

Authorities are now focused on maintaining a heavy security presence to prevent any further escalation of violence in Birgunj, a key transit point near the Indian border.
