In a daring act of courage, a mother in Bahraich district fought a leopard for nearly 10 minutes to save her five-year-old son from its jaws. The incident occurred on Thursday morning in Teliyanpurwa village, located within the Katarniaghat Range of the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary.
Attack in Broad Daylight
According to reports, Meena (32) was sitting near a sugarcane field with her son when a leopard suddenly emerged from the field and attacked the child. The leopard grabbed the boy and attempted to drag him away. Without hesitation, Meena confronted the beast and engaged in a fierce struggle to free her son.
Villagers Respond to Cries for Help
Eyewitnesses stated that the woman shouted for help while continuing to fight the leopard for about 10 minutes. Hearing her screams, villagers rushed to the spot carrying sticks and rods. As the crowd gathered, the leopard released the child and fled back into the sugarcane fields.
Additional Injuries Reported
While escaping, the leopard also attacked a youth named Umesh (26), who suffered deep injuries to his head and neck. Meena sustained serious injuries on her hands, legs, and back, while the child received minor scratches. All three injured were initially taken to Sujauli Primary Health Centre and later referred to the Community Health Centre in Mihimpurwa for further treatment.
Fear and Demand for Action
The incident has created fear and tension in the village, with residents demanding immediate action from the forest department to capture the leopard. Officials have deployed monitoring teams in the area and advised people to remain alert while efforts are underway to trace the leopard.
