The New England Patriots should be focusing solely on football right now. OTAs have commenced, quarterback Drake Maye appears poised for another strong season, and expectations remain elevated following last year's Super Bowl run. Instead, head coach Mike Vrabel continues to face persistent questions regarding the controversy involving Dianna Russini.
Recently, Vrabel added another layer to the unfolding story. Speaking to reporters during the Patriots' offseason activities, he sounded uncertain when asked if he might miss additional team events in the coming weeks. The coach did not commit to staying with the team full-time as the situation surrounding Russini continues to attract attention.
"I'm going to be out there today in full force, and I mean that, because who knows what's going to come up? I'm not even, you know, anything could happen, and so I'm going to focus on today," Vrabel told reporters during Patriots media availability.
That statement immediately sparked conversation across the league, as Vrabel had already stepped away from the Patriots earlier this year. During Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft in April, he left team activities to attend counseling sessions with his family. The controversy first erupted after photos surfaced showing Vrabel and Russini together at an Arizona resort. Both individuals are married and have children. The story gained further traction when older pictures from 2020 were reportedly discovered, allegedly showing the two kissing.
Since then, reactions across the NFL world have remained divided. Some believe Vrabel's personal life should remain private, while others question whether the situation crossed professional boundaries, given Russini's long tenure as a prominent NFL insider.
Nevertheless, the Patriots have attempted to keep their focus on football. Maye publicly supported Vrabel earlier this offseason, and the team continues preparations for what many anticipate will be another AFC title push. Maye finished as the MVP runner-up last season and ranked second in PFSN's QB Impact metric.
Vrabel also addressed missing the final day of the NFL Draft while speaking to reporters at the event. He made it clear he does not regret stepping away. "No, I don't regret missing it," Vrabel said during the same media session. "They moved around, they made some trades. Excited about the players that we got."
Currently, Vrabel remains on the field with the Patriots. However, after his latest comments, it is evident that even he cannot predict what comes next.
