Kuki and Naga Demand Hostage Release in Manipur

The Kuki and Naga communities have demanded the safe release of hostages abducted on May 13 following the killing of three members of the Thadou Baptist Association India in Manipur's Kangpokpi district. The incident has escalated tensions between the two communities, leading to blockades and restrictions on National Highway-2.

Ultimatums Issued by Naga Groups

The All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) has issued a four-day ultimatum to the state government, demanding the safe release and handover of six Naga hostages. The group warned that failure to comply could result in a boycott of the state government. This ultimatum underscores the urgency felt by the Naga community regarding the safety of their members.

Kuki Community's Response

In response, the Kuki Inpi Manipur has demanded that 14 Kuki hostages held by Nagas be handed over without any delay. They have announced a nationwide rally scheduled for May 30 to press for their demands. The Kuki community is also calling for immediate action to secure the release of their people.

Impact on National Highway-2

Following the May 13 incident, National Highway-2 from Kangpokpi to Senapati has been severely affected. Nagas have imposed an economic embargo on supplies for Kukis, while Kukis have restricted the movement of Nagas passing through Kangpokpi district. These blockades have disrupted daily life and economic activities in the region.

The situation remains tense as both communities await government intervention. The state government has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the hostage crisis and the ultimatums. Observers fear that without swift action, the conflict could escalate further, leading to more violence and instability in Manipur.
