State health officials in Kolkata have confirmed that six air travelers who arrived from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) or Uganda in recent weeks are currently under home surveillance. This precautionary measure follows the Ebola outbreak in the DRC. Although none of the individuals exhibit any symptoms, they will be monitored for three weeks as per standard operating procedures.
Precautionary Measures in Place
Health officials emphasized that while it is unlikely for the state to encounter a positive or suspected case, preparations are underway. Twelve isolation cabins at the ID Hospital in Beleghata, the state's premier institute for infectious diseases, have been readied as a precaution. These cabins are equipped to handle any potential cases that may arise.
Surveillance Protocol
The home surveillance involves regular check-ins by health workers to ensure the individuals remain symptom-free. The three-week period aligns with the maximum incubation period for the Ebola virus. Officials urge the public to remain calm and follow hygiene practices.
This proactive approach aims to prevent any spread of the virus within the state. The health department continues to monitor the situation closely and will update protocols as needed.
