A 29-year-old man from Kerala, identified as Yadukrishnan S Sajaikumar, was arrested by Anjuna police for allegedly driving a Mahindra Thar under the influence of alcohol and causing a fatal accident in Siolim, Goa. The incident occurred early in the morning when the accused, driving in a rash and negligent manner, collided head-on with a scooter, resulting in the death of the rider and injuries to the pillion rider.
Details of the Incident
Police received a call about the accident around 6 am and immediately dispatched a team to the scene in Siolim. According to PI Anjuna Krishna Sinari, the collision involved a Mahindra Thar and a scooter. The scooter rider succumbed to his injuries, while the pillion rider was hospitalized.
Anjuna ASI Krishna Naik filed a complaint on behalf of the state, stating that Yadukrishnan, despite being aware of the dangers of driving under the influence, consumed alcohol and drove the vehicle. He allegedly crossed his lane near Villa Antiga, Fernandes Waddo, Siolim, and struck an oncoming two-wheeler. The scooter was being ridden by 34-year-old Sanket Dabholkar, with 14-year-old Nischal Morajkar as pillion rider, who sustained grievous injuries.
Aftermath and Investigation
Sinari confirmed that Dabholkar died on the way to the District Hospital in Mapusa, while Morajkar is undergoing treatment for his injuries. The accused was arrested and sent for a medical test, which confirmed he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Yadukrishnan, who has been residing and working in Goa since 2022, is now in police custody.
This tragic incident marks the second major accident involving a tourist-driven Mahindra Thar in Goa within three days. In a separate hit-and-run case in Sirlim, Margao, a speeding Thar from Maharashtra critically injured a local woman rider, leading police to charge the driver with attempted murder.
