Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Wednesday that Israeli forces are persistently targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, even as diplomatic negotiations aimed at securing a long-term peace agreement are actively progressing. In a video message shared on social media platform X, Netanyahu expressed strong support for residents of northern Israel while emphasizing the ongoing military operations.
Military Action and Strategic Objectives
Netanyahu voiced unwavering support for the resilient residents of northern Israel, stating, "I support the residents of the north who continue to stand firm. At the same time, our forces continue to strike Hezbollah. Focused fighting in Bint Jbeil." He elaborated on the significance of Bint Jbeil, describing it as the former Hezbollah capital in southern Lebanon, where leader Hassan Nasrallah famously dismissed Israeli strength as "spiderwebs" 26 years ago.
"We are going to defeat Bint Jbeil; we are actually going to eliminate this large Hezbollah stronghold," Netanyahu asserted, highlighting the strategic importance of dismantling this key militant hub.
Expansion of Security Operations
The Prime Minister revealed that he has issued directives to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to broaden their operational scope. "At the same time, I gave instructions yesterday to the IDF to continue thickening the security zone, and also to deploy it eastwards to the slopes of Hermon, so that we can help our Druze brothers even better in times of distress," he explained, underscoring efforts to enhance protection for vulnerable communities.
Diplomatic Engagement and Peace Goals
Netanyahu pointed to renewed diplomatic discussions with Lebanon, noting that such negotiations had not occurred for over four decades. "At the same time, we are conducting negotiations with Lebanon. These negotiations have not taken place for 40 years or more. They are taking place now because we are very strong and the countries are coming to us—not just Lebanon," he stated, attributing the talks to Israel's perceived strength.
Outlining Israel's primary objectives in these talks, Netanyahu specified, "In the negotiations with Lebanon, there are two main goals: one, dismantling Hezbollah, and two, sustainable peace—peace through strength." This dual approach combines military pressure with diplomatic efforts to achieve lasting stability.
International Alignment and Regional Concerns
On the international front, Netanyahu confirmed that Israel and the United States are fully aligned in their objective to contain Iran's regional influence. "Our American friends keep us constantly updated on their contacts with Iran. The objectives of the United States and our own are identical," he said in a televised speech.
He detailed shared goals, including:
- Removal of enriched material from Iran
- Elimination of Iran's enrichment capabilities
- Reopening of the strategic Hormuz Strait
Uncertain Regional Landscape
Regarding the wider West Asia crisis, Netanyahu acknowledged the prevailing uncertainty. "It's too early to say how this thing will end, or how it will even progress, and regarding the possibility that the fighting will resume, we are prepared for any scenario," he cautioned, emphasizing Israel's readiness for multiple outcomes.
Ongoing Hostilities and Evacuation Advisories
While talks between Israel and Lebanon continue, with the security cabinet expected to review ceasefire prospects, hostilities persist on the ground. Both sides continue to exchange fire, and residents in southern Lebanon have been advised to evacuate amid escalating tensions, reflecting the fragile and volatile nature of the current situation.
