Israel Envoy Highlights Uncertainty Over Iran Conflict Duration
Ambassador of Israel to India, Reuven Azar, emphasized on Monday that the ongoing conflict with Iran remains shrouded in uncertainty, with its duration heavily dependent on Tehran's future actions and policy shifts. Speaking in New Delhi, Azar indicated that while initial projections from both Israel and the United States suggested the confrontation might conclude within a few weeks, evolving ground realities and Iran's leadership dynamics could significantly prolong tensions.
Factors Influencing the Conflict Timeline
In response to inquiries about a potential timeline, Azar clarified, "We are not specifying exactly how long it will take because it depends on many factors. At the outset, both the US and Israel talked about a few weeks. It also depends on the opportunity Iran has to change course." He pointed out that currently, there are no clear indications of Iran altering its approach; instead, Tehran appears to be reinforcing its current stance amid escalating regional hostilities.
Azar noted, "Right now, it doesn't seem that they are changing course. On the contrary, they are doubling down. They are digging in. But the situation can change in the future." This observation underscores the volatile nature of the conflict, with Iran's decision-making processes playing a pivotal role in determining its trajectory.
Internal Divisions Within Iran's Leadership
The Israeli envoy also referenced reports of potential internal disagreements within Iran's leadership regarding the handling of the conflict and broader strategic directions. Azar suggested that such differences could influence the situation's development, stating, "We are hearing different rumours about differences within the Iranian decision-making process. So, this can take more time." These internal dynamics add another layer of complexity to the already tense geopolitical landscape.
Diplomatic Pathways Remain Open
Despite the heightened tensions, Azar affirmed that diplomacy continues to be a viable option if Iran chooses to engage constructively with the international community. He reiterated Israel's longstanding position that a diplomatic resolution is achievable, saying, "We can have a diplomatic way out of this if the Iranians decide that they want to cooperate with the international community." This statement highlights the ongoing efforts to prevent further escalation while keeping channels for dialogue open.
Background of Regional Tensions
The remarks come amid heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia, where hostilities between Israel and Iran have raised global concerns about the risk of a broader regional conflict. The two nations have long been adversaries, with disputes encompassing:
- Iran's nuclear programme
- Regional security dynamics
- Tehran's support for armed groups hostile to Israel
In recent years, international efforts have focused on mitigating escalation and encouraging diplomatic engagement between Iran and major world powers. However, the situation remains volatile, characterized by periodic military exchanges and heightened rhetoric from both sides.
Azar's comments reflect Israel's current stance that the conflict's trajectory will largely hinge on whether Iran adjusts its policies or continues with what Israel perceives as an increasingly confrontational approach. As regional and global stakeholders monitor developments closely, uncertainty over the conflict's duration persists, with diplomatic avenues remaining a critical focus for de-escalation.
