India's largest airline, IndiGo, announced on Wednesday the suspension of all flight operations to and from Kuwait following a hostile drone strike on the passenger terminal of Kuwait International Airport. The attack occurred amidst an ongoing missile and drone offensive by Iran against the Gulf state.
Kuwait Airspace Shut Down
In response to the attack, Kuwaiti authorities promptly closed the country's airspace, causing widespread disruptions to commercial air traffic. The Kuwait Civil Aviation Authority posted on X: "All air traffic has been suspended, and flights are being diverted to alternative airports until further notice."
IndiGo's Travel Advisory
In an official statement, IndiGo confirmed that all flights to and from Kuwait would be suspended until 12:00 hours on June 4, 2026. The airline expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers but emphasized that the decision was a necessary precaution to ensure operational safety.
"We understand the impact this may cause to your travel plans and sincerely regret the inconvenience. Please be assured that this precautionary measure has been taken with the safety and well-being of our customers and crew as our highest priority," the airline stated.
IndiGo further noted that it remains in close coordination with relevant aviation authorities and is continuously monitoring developments in the region. The carrier said flight services would resume as soon as conditions permit and safe operating corridors become available.
Passengers have been advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport. The airline directed affected customers to visit its website for available travel options, including rebooking assistance or a full refund: "Please visit t.co/9VuwyhxE9G to explore available travel options, including rebooking assistance or a full refund."
Background and Context
The drone attack on Kuwait International Airport's Terminal 1 passenger building is part of a broader escalation involving Iran's military actions against Gulf states. The incident has raised concerns about regional security and the safety of civil aviation. Kuwait's swift closure of its airspace underscores the severity of the threat.
This suspension adds to the challenges faced by travelers in the region, with many flights being diverted to alternative airports. IndiGo's proactive measures aim to prioritize passenger and crew safety while maintaining flexibility for affected customers to rebook or seek refunds.
