Goa Fisheries Minister to Discuss Fuel Concerns with CM Ahead of Fishing Season
Goa Minister to Discuss Fuel Concerns with CM Before Fishing Season

Panaji: Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar announced that he will discuss the concerns facing Goa's fishing industry with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant before the resumption of fishing activities on August 1. This discussion comes in light of uncertainties surrounding fuel supplies amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Monsoon Fishing Ban and Its Purpose

Goa is currently under its annual monsoon fishing ban, which started on June 1 and will culminate on July 31. During this period, mechanised fishing activities are prohibited to allow for fish breeding and to ensure maritime safety during adverse weather conditions.

Concerns Over Fuel Supply Disruptions

Addressing concerns that the fishing sector could face when the new season begins if disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict continue, Halarnkar said it was too early to predict the situation. “By the time the season begins, the situation may recover. We cannot say that the present scarcity will continue forever,” he said.

Industry stakeholders have expressed concerns over reports of diesel and LPG shortages. They fear that prolonged supply disruptions could affect fishing operations and increase costs for vessel owners and fishermen once boats return to sea.

Potential Impact on Fishing Operations

The fishing industry in Goa relies heavily on diesel for boat engines and LPG for onboard refrigeration and cooking. Any shortage could lead to reduced fishing trips, lower catch volumes, and higher operational expenses. This would directly affect the livelihoods of thousands of fishermen and allied workers.

Halarnkar's assurance to take up the matter with the Chief Minister indicates the government's awareness of the issue. The state administration is expected to explore measures to ensure adequate fuel supply for the fishing fleet, possibly through coordination with central agencies or alternative sourcing.

The resumption of fishing activities on August 1 is crucial for the state's economy, and the government aims to mitigate any adverse impacts from the global situation.
