Ex-NFL Star Darron Lee Indicted for Murder of Girlfriend

The football world has witnessed many shocking headlines over the years, but few compare to the stunning turn in the life of former NFL star Darron Lee. Once a member of the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl-winning roster, Lee now finds himself at the center of a murder case that could forever alter his life.

A grand jury in Tennessee has indicted the former Chiefs linebacker on a first-degree murder charge in connection with the death of his girlfriend, Gabriella Carvalho Perpetuo. The case has progressed beyond an investigation and now heads toward what could become one of the most closely watched legal battles involving a former NFL player in recent years.

Prosecutors Pursue First-Degree Murder Charge

A Hamilton County grand jury returned an indictment charging Darron Lee with first-degree murder. Prosecutors later dropped a separate tampering with evidence charge to focus entirely on securing a murder conviction.

Authorities accuse Lee of killing Perpetuo at a residence in Ooltewah, Tennessee, in February 2026. According to court reports, an autopsy revealed that the 29-year-old suffered multiple blunt force injuries, including hematomas, fractures, and stab wounds.

One detail from the case quickly drew national attention: prosecutors alleged that Lee used ChatGPT while dealing with the situation. Court proceedings revealed that investigators found messages in which he allegedly asked how to obtain medical help without contacting police. Prosecutors also said he inquired whether a fall could explain bruising around both eyes and what were described as "two stabby looking wounds."

Lee remains in custody at the Hamilton County Jail without bond. Prosecutors have not ruled out seeking the death penalty, with a final decision expected in the coming weeks.

A Dramatic Fall from NFL Stardom

The case marks a dramatic fall for a player once viewed as one of college football's brightest defensive talents. Lee starred at Ohio State, helping the Buckeyes win a national championship before the New York Jets selected him with the 20th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

He later joined the Chiefs during their 2019 Super Bowl season and earned a championship ring, even though he did not play in the title game. His final NFL appearance came with the Buffalo Bills in November 2020.

For now, the football story has faded into the background. The focus rests on the courtroom, where Lee faces the most serious charge of his life. He has pleaded not guilty, and under the law, remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty at trial.
