The central government has sanctioned Rs 3,300 crore for the construction of 54 bridges at all railway gates in Srikakulam district, promising smoother commutes for residents. This initiative, the first of its kind in the country, involves building flyovers and underpasses at level crossings (LCs) where roads intersect railway tracks. These safety barriers currently require gates to close as trains approach, causing traffic delays.
Project Details and Timeline
Union Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for a flyover in Neelavathi village, Palasa area. All 54 bridges are expected to be completed within two years. The railway authorities are also working on constructing a third railway line and implementing measures for high-speed trains, benefiting local commuters and travelers.
Background and Railway Zone Changes
The Railway Board recently transferred the Palasa to Icchapuram railway stations from East Coast Railways to the newly formed South Coast Railway Zone. In response, authorities are removing level crossing gates in Khurda and Waltair divisions by constructing flyovers and underpasses. Detailed project reports (DPRs) have been prepared for both divisions.
Phased Construction Plan
In the first phase, 17 flyovers will be constructed at locations including Talabhadra, Neelavati, Baaligaon, Palavaalsa, and Karapadu. The remaining bridges will be built in the second phase. The railway officials have agreed to construct the bridges and related infrastructure.
