Silchar: In a major crackdown on illegal drug trafficking, Cachar police seized a consignment of banned cough syrup valued at approximately Rs 2 crore during a routine checking operation on NH-27 near the Puticherra toll gate under Barkhola police station on Thursday night, reports BB Goswami.
Details of the Seizure
Police intercepted a six-wheeler truck and conducted a thorough search, leading to the recovery of 21,600 bottles of codeine phosphate syrup, packed in 144 cartons. Additionally, two mobile phones were seized from the vehicle.
Smuggling Route
According to police sources, the contraband was allegedly being smuggled from West Bengal to Tripura. Cachar DSP (border) Rimank Baruah stated that the investigation suggests the consignment was intended for illegal trafficking across the region.
Driver Detained
The truck driver, identified as Mithun Sarkar alias Motin Sarkar, a resident of West Tripura district, was detained from the spot for questioning. Further investigations are underway to uncover the broader network involved in the smuggling operation.
