A tragic accident occurred in Rajkot district early Monday morning when a private bus carrying pilgrims overturned near Gondal town, resulting in the deaths of two women and injuries to around 20 others. The incident took place around 4:30 a.m. near Vorakotda village.
Details of the Accident
According to police officials, the bus was returning from a religious pilgrimage when the driver attempted to reverse the vehicle to allow an oncoming truck to pass on a narrow single-lane road. The driver misjudged the distance, causing the bus to lose control and overturn into a rocky field beside the elevated road.
Assistant Superintendent of Police, Rajkot Rural, Prakhar Kumar stated, "The road is narrow, and both vehicles cannot cross simultaneously. The bus driver reversed but misjudged the distance, causing the vehicle to overturn into the rocky field."
Casualties and Injuries
The deceased have been identified as Shanta Makwana and her daughter-in-law Manju, both residents of Gondal. They sustained fatal head injuries while seated near a window. Nearly 20 other passengers suffered minor wounds and were treated at nearby hospitals.
The bus, carrying as many as 60 devotees, had departed from Gondal on Sunday morning to visit religious sites, including Bagdana. The accident occurred as the group was returning home.
Investigation Underway
Police have launched an investigation into the incident. The driver has been detained for questioning, and authorities are examining whether negligence or road conditions contributed to the crash. The injured are reported to be in stable condition.
