In a tragic incident in Jharkhand's Dhanbad district, four workers lost their lives after being buried under a heap of coal slurry at a private coal washery. The accident occurred on Tuesday at a facility located in the Katras area, about 15 kilometers from Dhanbad city.
Details of the Incident
The workers were engaged in clearing operations near a slurry pond when a large quantity of coal slurry suddenly collapsed, burying them alive. Rescue teams were immediately rushed to the spot, and efforts to retrieve the bodies are ongoing. Officials from the district administration and police have reached the site to oversee the rescue operations.
Rescue Operations and Response
According to local authorities, the bodies of all four workers have been recovered. The deceased have been identified as residents of nearby villages. The exact cause of the collapse is being investigated, and preliminary reports suggest a structural failure in the slurry containment area.
The district administration has announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of each deceased worker. A probe has been ordered to determine if safety norms were violated at the washery.
Background on Coal Slurry Accidents
Coal slurry, a mixture of coal dust and water, is a byproduct of coal washing. It is often stored in ponds or containment areas. Accidents involving slurry collapses are not uncommon in mining regions, posing significant risks to workers. Safety experts emphasize the need for strict adherence to guidelines and regular inspections to prevent such tragedies.
The incident has once again highlighted the hazardous working conditions in the mining sector, prompting calls for better safety measures and accountability.
