Jalpaiguri: Ten Bangladeshi nationals voluntarily presented themselves at a holding centre in Changrabandha, located in Cooch Behar's Mekhliganj subdivision, on Saturday, formally requesting the authorities to deport them back to their homeland.
Illegal Entry and Stay
According to sources, these individuals had entered India illegally nearly ten years ago and had been residing in various states, working as daily wage labourers and domestic helpers. Over time, they managed to obtain local identity documents, including voter ID cards.
Role of Agents
An official explained that all of these people had taken assistance from agents to cross the border unlawfully after paying substantial sums of money. Attempting to return on their own would have meant paying these agents even more. Additionally, with the change in government, crossing back would have become a difficult task. Consequently, they decided to voluntarily appear at the holding centre.
The development highlights the challenges faced by illegal immigrants and the complexities involved in repatriation processes.
