IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam as Rain Threat Looms
Yellow Alert in Kerala: IMD Warns of Rain, Thunderstorms

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed the districts of Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam under a yellow alert due to forecasts of significant rainfall and potential thunderstorms. This weather development is expected to affect several parts of Kerala and the Lakshadweep islands, prompting authorities to issue specific warnings for the region's coastal communities.

Weather Systems and Forecast Details

The current unstable weather conditions are being fueled by a low-pressure area that formed over the Southwest Bay of Bengal on Sunday. This system is moving in a westward direction, injecting moisture into the atmosphere and sustaining the northeast monsoon activity. The IMD has indicated that another low-pressure area is likely to develop over the Southeast Bay of Bengal around November 22, with predictions of further intensification in the subsequent days.

Alongside the yellow alert for the two Kerala districts, the weather office has warned of squally conditions. Wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, are anticipated along and off the South Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, the Comorin area, and over the Andaman Sea and adjoining parts of the Bay of Bengal. A specific fishermen warning has been issued for South Kerala, advising against venturing into these turbulent seas.

Rainfall Deficit and Probable Impacts

Despite the current alert, the broader picture for the northeast monsoon season reveals a concerning shortfall. Data as of November 16 shows that several regions are experiencing a rainfall deficit. Kerala has recorded a -26% deficit, while Tamil Nadu and Puducherry stand at -9% and -24% respectively. Other areas like Rayalaseema, south interior Karnataka, and Mahe are also seeing subdued rain levels.

The IMD has outlined several probable impacts due to the expected heavy rainfall, which residents should be prepared for. These include:

  • Poor visibility leading to traffic congestion.
  • Waterlogging and tree falls disrupting traffic and increasing travel time.
  • Potential damage to power infrastructure from uprooted trees.
  • Possible harm to standing crops and vegetables close to maturity.
  • Risk of landslides, mudslides, and landslips in vulnerable areas.
  • Threat of injury to people and cattle in open areas due to lightning.

Recommended Safety Measures

In light of these forecasts, the meteorological department has suggested a series of actions for the public. It is crucial to follow all traffic advisories issued by local authorities. People should avoid staying in vulnerable structures and are advised to prop up vegetable pandals to prevent damage. During thunderstorms or lightning, seeking immediate shelter is paramount. Everyone in the affected regions is encouraged to stay updated on the latest weather alerts from official sources like the IMD.
