Yellow Alert for Thunderstorms in Tricity from Sunday, IMD Issues Advisory
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in the Tricity region, encompassing Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana, effective from Sunday, March 29, 2026. This warning comes as a fresh western disturbance is expected to influence the Himalayan region starting March 28, leading to increased weather activity across northern India.
Current Weather Conditions and Temperature Trends
Currently, the Tricity is experiencing clear skies and above-normal temperatures. On Thursday, March 26, Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 32.4°C, which is two degrees above the seasonal average, while the minimum settled at 18.7°C, also two degrees above normal. Across the broader region, Patiala in Punjab logged the highest maximum temperature at 34°C, marking a significant 4.3°C above normal, and Nuh in Haryana recorded 35.6°C, the highest in that state.
Five-Day Weather Outlook and Forecast Details
According to the IMD's special weather bulletin, the next two days—Friday and Saturday, March 27-28—will remain largely dry with partly cloudy skies. Temperatures in Chandigarh are anticipated to hover around 30°C maximum and 18-19°C minimum during this period. However, a significant shift is expected from Sunday onward.
Light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, is likely on March 29 and 30. This has prompted the IMD to place both days under a yellow alert for the Tricity, indicating potential disruptions and hazards.
IMD Advisory and Safety Precautions
The IMD has issued specific advisories for residents and farmers in light of the impending severe weather. Residents are urged to avoid venturing outdoors during thunderstorms to minimize risks from lightning and strong winds. For the agricultural community, farmers have been advised to take protective measures for standing wheat and other rabi crops, which could be vulnerable to damage from gusty winds and potential hail.
Additionally, the IMD recommends that farmers avoid irrigation, pesticide spraying, or fertilizer application during the stormy period to prevent crop loss and ensure safety. This alert underscores the importance of preparedness as the region transitions from warm, dry conditions to potentially volatile weather patterns over the weekend.
