World Bank Team Reviews Patna's Waste Management

A two-member World Bank team visited Patna Municipal Corporation’s animal birth control (ABC) centre and animal crematorium at Ramchak Bairiya on Wednesday to review the civic body’s management of animal bio-waste and solid waste. The team assessed systems for sterilisation-linked biomedical waste disposal, scientific cremation of carcasses and processing of approximately 1,200 tonnes of municipal waste generated daily in the city.

Evaluation of Animal Bio-Waste Management

The visit was part of an ongoing evaluation of animal bio-waste management systems across Bihar. During the inspection, officials briefed the team on operations at the ABC centre, where around 40 stray dogs are brought daily for sterilisation. The animals receive pre- and post-operative care and are kept under observation for at least four days before being released at the locations from which they were picked up.

Facilities Inspected

The delegation also inspected the dog hospital’s laboratory, operation theatre and other facilities. Officials stated that biomedical waste generated during sterilisation is collected and sent to the incinerator at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) for disposal in accordance with environmental norms. At the animal crematorium, the team learned that two electric furnaces handle the disposal of five to six carcasses daily. The facility uses wet scrubber technology to control emissions and can cremate even large animals within about three hours, after which the ash is scientifically buried on the premises.
