Vadodara Takes Action: Multi-Stakeholder Meet Addresses Vishwamitri River Pollution
VMC, GPCB, CREDAI meet to tackle Vishwamitri river issues

In a significant move to address the long-standing environmental concerns surrounding the Vishwamitri river, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) organized a high-level meeting with key stakeholders. The gathering focused on critical issues like the illegal dumping of construction debris and the ongoing problem of pollution in the river and other local water bodies.

Key Players Unite for a Cleaner River

The meeting saw participation from a diverse group of officials and representatives, highlighting a collaborative approach. Attendees included senior officials from the VMC itself, members of a special committee appointed by the State Human Rights Commission to monitor Vishwamitri-related initiatives, and authorities from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB). Importantly, representatives from the Vadodara chapter of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Associations of India (CREDAI) were also present, bringing the crucial real estate and construction sector to the discussion table.

Addressing Debris and Sewage: A Two-Pronged Strategy

During the discussions, VMC officials provided an update on the handling of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. They confirmed that debris collected from the river is being systematically transported to a dedicated processing plant located in Atladara. In a direct appeal to the construction industry, the civic body requested CREDAI office-bearers to communicate to all their member developers that the corporation is ensuring proper processing of all such waste and that irresponsible dumping must cease.

Another major point on the agenda was the identification of sewage discharge points that continue to contaminate the Vishwamitri. Officials assured the attendees that these specific points are being mapped and that concrete steps will be taken to address this source of pollution, which is vital for improving the river's health.

Signs of Improvement and the Path Ahead

Amidst the plans and commitments, sources at the meeting noted an encouraging development: the water quality in the Vishwamitri river has already demonstrated remarkable improvement. This positive trend underscores the potential impact of sustained and coordinated efforts. The multi-stakeholder meeting marks a proactive step by the VMC to enforce accountability, streamline waste management, and tackle sewage inflow, aiming to restore the ecological balance of the city's important river system.
