Villagers Detain 20 Trucks Dumping Industrial Ash in Odisha

Tension prevailed in Kutra block in Sundargarh district on Sunday after villagers of Uparbahal detained around 20 trucks loaded with industrial ash since Saturday night, alleging illegal dumping in their area causing severe environmental pollution.

Kutra police and a team from the Regional Transport Office, Sundargarh, were at the spot examining the detained vehicles when reports last came in.

According to residents, overloaded trucks carrying ash are parked along the Biju Expressway during the day and later moved into village areas under the cover of darkness. The waste is reportedly dumped on agricultural fields, riverbanks, forests, and residential zones. Villagers alleged that the practice has led to declining soil fertility, directly impacting farming and livelihoods. There are also growing concerns about contamination of water sources and harm to biodiversity.

Environmental Impact and Community Concerns

The illegal dumping of industrial ash has raised serious environmental concerns among the local population. Residents claim that the ash contains harmful chemicals that seep into the ground, affecting groundwater quality and making the soil unfit for cultivation. Farmers have reported reduced crop yields and deterioration in soil health over the past few years.

Health Risks for Villagers

Apart from environmental damage, the villagers fear long-term health risks due to exposure to ash particles. Inhalation of fine ash can cause respiratory problems, skin irritation, and other ailments. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to these hazards.

Authorities Take Action

Following the detention of the trucks, local authorities have initiated an investigation. The Regional Transport Office is checking the vehicles for overloading and proper documentation. Police are also looking into the alleged illegal dumping and may take legal action against the responsible parties.

Villagers have demanded strict action against the truck owners and the industries generating the ash. They have also called for measures to prevent such incidents in the future, including regular monitoring and stricter enforcement of environmental laws.
