The Mormugao Municipal Council took significant steps on Monday, approving a major waste management project and enhancing employee benefits. Council members gave the green light for a new compressed biogas plant at Headland-Sada in Mormugao.

Biogas Plant to Transform Organic Waste

This facility will process 25 tonnes of municipal solid waste every day. The plant aims to convert organic waste into clean, usable fuel. The council allocated around 3,000 square meters of land for this initiative.

Authorities also approved provisions for an electric transformer and a water connection to support the plant's operations. The Goa Waste Management Corporation proposed this project and will invest over Rs 8 crore to make it a reality.

MMC chairperson Girish Borkar highlighted the plant's importance. He stated it represents a crucial step in sustainable waste management for the region.

Employee Benefits Enhanced

In a separate decision, the council addressed employee welfare. It agreed to increase the medical allowance for municipal workers from Rs 7,000 to Rs 9,000 annually.

Implementing Long-Pending Agreement

This increase fulfills terms outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Goa Municipal Employees Association. The agreement had been pending since 2022.

Additionally, workers recently granted temporary status by the government will now receive a Rs 3,000 medical allowance. These decisions reflect the council's focus on both environmental initiatives and staff welfare.
